DDoS Brute Force Attacks – Hackers Escalate DDoS Attacks as Part of International Cyber Warfare Strategy

DDoS Brute Force Attacks
DDoS Brute Force Attacks

In April 2022, the pro-Russian group KILLNET was reported to have carried out a series of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks

against a number of websites including the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE).

It is an organization founded in Finland, along with other European websites in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Romania, and the United Kingdom.

According to findings by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA),

while there are no reports of the attacks having had a significant impact on the targeted organizations, this indicates an active increase in targets outside Ukraine.

About KILLNET

KILLNET is a pro-Russia / anti-NATO threat group that carries out DDoS attacks

against countries that are actively supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The group emerged as a pro-Russian hacking group in January, initially starting as a “DDoS-as-a-service” group

for users to rent botnets to carry out attacks. Following the invasion of Ukraine, the group shifted its focus to more hacktivist-style activity in support of Russia.

Given that the group appears to have significant backing, similar attacks are likely to continue as well.

KILLNET Timeline

  • January 23, 2022 – KILLNET emerged as a pro-Russian hacking group.
  • February 25, 2022 – A post was created on Telegram titled “Anonymous, your time is up!” in response to pro-Ukrainian hacking elements.
  • February 28, 2022 – The group created a “call to arms” post directed at hackers in “the Russian Federation and CIS countries”.
  • Also February 2022 – The group shared a link to the Cyber Army of Russia Telegram group to encourage KILLNET followers to subscribe to the channel to watch KILLNET attacks.
  • Date unknown – A partnership with XakNet was announced – indicating that several pro-Russian hacking elements had united their forces to conduct cyber warfare operations against Ukraine and its allies. The attacks included multiple cyber attacks against pro-Ukrainian targets, including an American airport and several Ukrainian government entities.
  • April 20, 2022 – The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) listed KILLNET as one of several pro-Russian cybercrime groups that could pose a threat to critical infrastructure organizations.

CISA also listed the following cybercrime groups based on industry and open-source reports,

by cyber authorities in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom:

  • The Coming Project
  • Killnet
  • Mummy Spider
  • Salty Spider
  • Scully Spider
  • Smoky Spider
  • Wizard Spider
  • Xaknet Team

DDoS in Cyber Warfare

DDoS attacks are often hailed as the weapon of choice in cyber warfare, primarily due to their ability to disrupt applications and networks.

In the first part of this year, as significant global events unfolded and tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated,

our data and analysis from across the industry showed an increase in DDoS attacks.

This activity, combined with the ongoing geopolitical instability,

has prompted caution worldwide regarding the growing likelihood of further cyber attacks in the future.

As a result, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and its partners issued Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC) technical guidance,

including examples on its website of DDoS attacks on government and financial websites in Ukraine in March to inform business leaders.

And those responsible for digital security to prepare for attacks and adapt their digital security posture.

Threat Research

Imperva Research Labs observed a spike in the volume of DDoS attacks targeting sites in Ukraine in the first quarter,

which included attacks on a number of financial services targets.

By March 2022, DDoS attacks had generally increased as the likelihood of a physical incursion escalated.

DDoS attacks consistently rank highly in the ENISA threat landscape and remain one of the most significant threats to IT systems and networks

with their ability to overwhelm resources, affect performance, and cause severe disruptions.

DDoS Mitigation Best Practices

With the increase in DDoS attacks against European targets,

it is critical to have robust DDoS mitigation operations in place. Having a firewall alone will not be sufficient

to stop the volumes of DDoS attacks launched by KILLNET and other threat actors.

To help organizations prepare for a DDoS attack and make the right choices for DDoS protection,

we have compiled a list of DDoS mitigation best practices.

And with that, my friend, we have successfully completed the mission ✌
