Rising user interest in the eSIM in Egypt What is the eSIM and which devices support it

What is the eSIM and which devices support it, and does your phone run it or not — the eSIM, the modern alternative to the traditional SIM card, has topped the Google search engine over the past hours, as citizens' questions have increased about when it will become available in Egypt. This advanced technology aims to provide an easier and more flexible user experience, especially with its support for modern smart devices.

The eSIM is considered an important step toward modernizing communication systems, as it offers many advantages such as the ability to easily change the service provider without needing to replace the physical SIM card, making it an ideal choice for users looking for more convenience and flexibility in their daily use.

What is the eSIM?

eSIM, or embedded Subscriber Identity Module, is a digital communication chip embedded inside modern devices, and it is considered an alternative to traditional removable SIM cards.

The eSIM stores network information directly inside the device, making it smaller in size and more effective.

This chip is integrated inside the device and is easily activated by scanning a QR code, which reduces the need to use traditional devices and SIM cards. This technology enhances the user experience by providing more convenience and flexibility in connecting to networks.

Advantages of the eSIM

The eSIM has a number of advantages that make it an ideal choice for users seeking a modern communications technology experience. Among the most notable of these advantages:

  • Easy switching between networks: The user can easily change the communication network or plan without needing to manually replace the SIM card, which saves time and effort.
  • Higher security: Since the chip is embedded inside the device, this reduces the likelihood of losing it or it being damaged, making it more secure compared to traditional SIM cards.
  • Support for modern devices: The eSIM supports most modern smartphones, including iPhones and new Android devices, making it a suitable choice for users of advanced devices.
  • Improving smart device design: Thanks to eliminating the need for the traditional plastic SIM card, the eSIM contributes to reducing the size of smart devices and improving their internal designs, allowing manufacturers to provide more space for other technologies inside the devices.

Devices that support eSIM technology

eSIM technology supports a wide range of modern devices, including:

  • iPhones: from the iPhone XS and later.
  • Android devices: such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel devices.
  • Tablets: such as the iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab.
  • Wearable devices: such as smartwatches that support cellular connectivity.

These devices contribute to enhancing the user experience by providing flexible and convenient connectivity options for users.

The impact of eSIM on the future of communications

The eSIM has become a core feature in many modern devices, such as:

  • Smartphones: such as the modern iPhone series and some Android devices.
  • Wearable devices: such as Apple Watch watches.
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices: such as smart home devices.

With the spread of eSIM, the way we use phones and smart devices is expected to change radically, through:

  • Reducing the use of natural resources: The eSIM will contribute to reducing the need to manufacture plastic SIM cards, which helps protect the environment.
  • Providing a better user experience: The eSIM will provide a more integrated and flexible experience for users, making it easier for them to manage their communications.
  • Enabling users to move between communication networks: The eSIM will allow users to switch between networks easily, without restrictions, which enhances their freedom in choosing service providers.

Does the eSIM work in Egypt?

So far, no official announcement has been issued by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority or Telecom Egypt regarding the specific date for launching the eSIM in Egypt. However, Engineer Mohamed Shamroukh, CEO of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, indicated in press statements during the Cairo ICT 2024 exhibition (held from November 17-20, 2024) that eSIM electronic SIM services will launch before the end of the current year.

Cairo ICT 2024 exhibition events: improving the quality of communication services

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority held a series of seminars at the conclusion of the Cairo ICT 2024 exhibition events, where Dr. Tarek Hassan, head of the National Projects Sector, addressed the authority's strategy to ensure the availability of high-quality communication services. He also reviewed the development of mobile services in the field of development projects over ten years, focusing on the authority's procedures in planning the communications infrastructure in smart cities and communities.

Under the title “Communications Infrastructure… the Cornerstone of Smart Cities”, the importance of improving infrastructure to meet modern communication needs was highlighted.

In another seminar entitled “Measurement Standards and Their Impact on Improving Mobile Quality“, Engineer Sameh Fathy, director of the General Administration of Quality Measurements, discussed the most prominent procedures followed by the authority to measure the quality of mobile services. The processes of updating quality measurement methodologies in light of operating modern communications technologies in the Egyptian market were also addressed, reflecting the authority's commitment to improving the level of services provided to users.

What is the electronic eSIM?

The eSIM (the user's digital identity card) is an advanced technology that allows customers to activate a data plan from the telecom company without needing to use a physical SIM card. The user can install 8 or more eSIMs on iPhones, allowing them to use one number on more than one network at the same time.

Key characteristics of the eSIM:

  • Embedded inside devices: The eSIM is integrated into the motherboard of the phone or smart devices, which means it does not need to be installed or removed by the user.
  • Ease of use: The user can manage the chip externally, as they can load any SIM card onto the eSIM, providing great flexibility in managing communication services.
  • Multiple networks: The eSIM allows using one number on multiple networks at the same time, making it easy for users to switch between networks as needed without having to change the physical SIM card.

These features contribute to improving the user experience and facilitating access to modern communication services.
