iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable iPhone, Specs, Price and Availability

After years of rumors and delays, Apple finally did it. At the end of its keynote on September 9, 2026, the company unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, starting at $1,999. Pre-orders opened on October 16, and the phone reached stores in main markets on October 23.
The real question now is not whether Apple made a foldable, but whether it was worth the wait. Here are the iPhone Duo's specs, price, strengths and weaknesses, and how it compares with Samsung's best.
A design that opens like a book
The Duo has two displays: a 5.4-inch outer screen for quick use when closed and a 7.6-inch inner screen when open, about 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max according to Apple.
Open, it is just 5.2 mm thick, Apple's thinnest iPhone ever. Closed, it measures 11.3 mm, the thickest since the iPhone 3GS, and it weighs 254 grams, slightly more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The body is Grade 5 titanium, the hinge has more than 100 parts with a 3D-printed titanium cover, and Apple says a nano-texture finish makes the crease less visible. It is rated IP68 for water and dust.
Key specs
- Chip: A20 Pro, the same as iPhone 18 Pro, with up to 35% better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro per Apple.
- Storage: 256GB up to 2TB.
- Rear cameras: 48MP main with 2x optical-quality zoom, 48MP ultra wide, and 4K120 Dolby Vision video.
- Front camera: hidden under the inner display when not in use.
- Security: Touch ID in the side button, no Face ID.
- SIM: eSIM only worldwide.
- Colors: star white and night sky.
Battery and charging
Apple fitted two batteries, one on each side, managed as a single system. It quotes up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer screen and about 24 hours of mixed use. Charging reaches about 50% in 20 minutes wired, or about 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2.
Software made for the big screen
The headline feature is Split View: the Duo is the first iPhone that can run two apps side by side, or two windows of the same app such as Safari. Apple Pencil support on both screens is coming later in 2026. Note for Europe: the new AI-powered Siri features will not be available in the EU at first, and Apple has not given a date.
Price and availability
Pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB and rises with storage up to 2TB; in India it starts at โน2,99,900. Sales began on October 23 in main markets, with 28 more markets on October 30. Check Apple's official site or an authorized reseller in your country, and be wary of overpriced imports in the first weeks.
iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold
Apple's price was a pleasant surprise: IDC had expected about $2,500, and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sells for $2,099, $100 more. Samsung's phone is lighter and thinner, though: Engadget measured the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at about 201 grams and 9.7 mm closed, versus 254 grams and 11.3 mm for Apple. Apple's strengths are ecosystem integration, chip performance and camera quality.
Is it worth buying?
If you read, watch video or work on documents on your phone, the inner screen and Split View will genuinely change your experience, and longtime iPhone users finally get a foldable without switching to Android. If you value a light phone in your pocket, or the price is a stretch, waiting may be wiser: first-generation products usually improve in the next round, and hinge durability will only become clear after months of real use.
Tips before buying any foldable
- Try it in your hand first: closed thickness and weight feel different in a pocket than on a spec sheet.
- Check warranty and screen coverage: inner screen repairs are expensive, so look at the protection plans available in your country.
- Don't add random screen protectors: flexible displays need dedicated protectors, and some come pre-installed and shouldn't be removed.
- Watch for small hard objects: a grain of sand or a key caught between the halves can leave a permanent mark.
- Check your daily apps: not every app is optimized for large screens and split view yet.
The bottom line
The iPhone Duo is Apple's official statement that foldables are no longer a side experiment. The design is elegant, the specs are strong and the price came in lower than expected, but the weight and closed thickness are the price of that big screen. Either way, Apple and Samsung competing here is good news for buyers.
